3I
don't know if everyone goes through an awkward stage, but this was
early in mine: 7th grade.
Seventh and eighth grades were very
difficult for me. My family was large, and our finances were on the
decline. I went to four different middle schools in two years as we
kept looking for more affordable housing. Fortunately, our financial
situation stabilized by the time I entered high school.

is my press card from Catalina High School in Tucson, Arizona.
By the time I was a freshman in high school, I wanted nothing
more than to be a writer. I thought the best way to go about
this was to become a journalist. So I took journalism courses
in high school and began writing for the award-winning CHS
newspaper.

I even wrote a humor column in my sophomore year. Unfortunately, it
wasn't very funny. But it gave me experience in writing for
deadline...not always a fun job. By the time I graduated from high
school I wasn't sure I wanted to be a journalist anymore. I did want
to write, but I wanted to write books.
4This
is my senior class picture at McClintock High School in Tempe,
Arizona (where I finished the last two years of school). Although
you wouldn't know it to look at me now, I weighed 120 pounds at
graduation and used Brylcreem in my hair.
