James M. Deem has introduced
thousands of middle school and high school students both in the United
States and Europe to the subject of Auschwitz through his compelling
presentation.

In his presentation on
Auschwitz, Deem introduces students to
the subject of the Holocaust. Then he briefly discussed the years leading up
to World War II in Germany and the origination of the Nazi
concentration camps. He describes how Auschwitz was created and explains
its quick transformation from a holding camp to a death camp. He
outlines the various groups of prisoners who were incarcerated and
murdered there. He reads primary source passages from his book, Auschwitz:
Voices From the Death Camp, to
illustrate what the camp was like . He concludes by
discussing the final days of Auschwitz, the fate of the prisoners
alive when the camp was evacuated, the was crime trials of its Nazi guards
and commandant, and its present state as a museum. His PowerPoint
presentation includes many images that he took when he visited Auschwitz
to research his book. This presentation is suitable for students aged 12 and up who are studying the Holocaust.
