James "Mummy" Deem and The Mystery of the Missing Slides

A Mystery by Nicole V.!

About the author

Nicole V. attends Albany Avenue Elementary. She was born in Brooklyn and moved here when she was two weeks old. She lives with her mom, dad, sister, and dog. She wants to be a writer when she grows up.

Chapter 1. It Was An Accident!

The whole school was in an uproar! How could I have gotten into this horrible crime?

To tell the truth, it was an accident...

It all started when I went to the cafeteria to retrieve a jacket I left there the day before. When I walked in I knew something funny was going on. Nothing that you would notice unless you looked. (I didn't even think anything of it at the time.)

The custodians were setting up for Mr. Deem's arrival. Mrs. Norton was there too. When she took the mummy slides out of a box and put it into her purse, I thought she was going to put it back. I took my coat and headed back to my classroom.

Chapter 2. Me in the Middle!

Later that morning when Mr. Deem was presenting. To be exact he had just finished telling us about his alien encounter, when he stopped abruptly!

He fished around in a big box. Then he looked in. He whispered something to Pete the custodian.

Before I knew what had happened, janitors were all over the room! Ripping apart bags, and boxes in search for the slides that only I knew were in Mrs. Norton's purse!

Then Mrs. Norton got on stage and said angrily, "One of these ungrateful adolescents stole it to stop the presentation! Recess will be canceled until the slides are found!

Chapter 3. The Lunatic Librarian

That afternoon while I was going to the library to take out a book for my civil war book report I again noticed something. Now this was something that even Helen Keller would for sure notice.  Mrs. Norton (if that's her real name) was by her desk. The odd part was she was laughing evilly and hovering over something. The missing slides! Before I could get out she spotted me.

(What happened now was something that I normally wouldn't have done!)

"Mrs. Norton! Your days of stealing from famous authors are over!" She laughed evilly again. That scared me.

"Ha! You're too late! I already stole them! But now you know my secret! I'll have to do away with you!" She held the biggest book in the library, the Unabridged Dictionary, to my head! She was about to let it fall on me! It wouldn't kill me, but it would knock me out for a good 15 minutes! Who knows where she can bring me by then? Will I live to see my 11th birthday?

Chapter 4. A School Hero

Mrs. Norton bared the mammoth book down. She was about to let go when
I suddenly grinned. This confused her greatly.

"No Mrs. Norton." I said as I let go of the intercom button. "The whole school heard you."

Just as I predicted, a crowd was running down the hallway.

"Ha! She screamed! You'll never catch me!" She screamed as she swung from a banner and flew out the window!

"Catch her!" I yelled as the janitors broke down the door!

"It's too late!" cried the janitors!

    " NO! I got a plan! Pssst!"

    Janitors ran down the hallway.

All of a sudden I screamed: "James Deem is in the janitor's office."

We waited five minute. Then just as I predicted in came Mrs. Norton. She yelled, "James Deem"! Where  are you?"

" Grab her!" I yelled as two janitors wrestled her into the closet. Mrs. Norton turned out that she had escaped from the local insane asylum. She had stolen from other authors in other schools too! She is now in a room with padded walls and now is watching reruns of James Deem's visit.

I was rewarded with a gold plated copy of The Real Ghost Book of Christina Rose. I am from here on remembered as the school hero! Hey, where'd my book go....

The End ???

Nicole wants to inform everyone:

THIS WAS TYPED WITH MRS. NORTON'S PERMISSION EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS BEEN INFORMED THAT SHE IS THE VILLAIN.....

She also wants to thank:

Mrs. Norton: thank you for letting me type most of the story on the library computer.  Also because you make a great villain! Alyson: Thanks for staying up here everyday at lunch! Lauren: Thank you for letting me type the final chapter on your computer. James M. Deem: Thanks for publishing me!  Aly and I both loved your presentation on the mummies! Thank goodness they weren't really stolen! P.S. The Very Real Ghost Book of Christina Rose is one of my favorite books!
