Hello, Birmingham! I was honored to
be the guest of the Birmingham Public Library and the Birmingham Art Museum for
three days.
Birmingham
Public Library. The Birmingham
Public Library selected my book Bodies
from the Ash as its 2007 Read It Forward selection. Copies of the
book were distributed free of charge to readers at library branches. Once they
finished the book, readers were encouraged to “Read It Forward" by
passing the book along to another person. Readers could then log onto the
library’s web site at www.bplcyberteen.org
to post a comment.
I visited six branches of the library
and two public schools over a two day period in November 2007. I spoke about my
book and gave a PowerPoint presentation that included many rare images of
Pompeii and the body casts discovered there. My thanks to the
students, families, and staff members who attended my talks at the Smithfield,
West End, Avondale, Springville Road, and Five Points West branches as well as
the students, faculty and staff of North Birmingham Elementary School and Woodlawn High
School.
Birmingham
Art Museum. On the third day I gave two talks to students as
well as members and their families at the Birmingham Art Museum in honor of the
museum's sensational Pompeii exhibit, Tales
from an Eruption.
