Brillantmont International School

Lausanne, Switzerland

Bonjour étudiants!

I visited your beautiful campus overlooking Lake Geneva and spoke to students in Years 7-13 for two days in late November 2011.

On my first day, I began by giving a general presentation to the entire student body in the dining room. I talked about how I became a writer, concentrating on various experiences during my childhood that influenced this decision. I also shared my love of French language and literature and how it has influenced various writing projects as well, especially my book, Bodies from the Ice: Melting Glaciers and the Recovery of the Past. François Villon's poem (and haunting refrain) "Où sont les neiges d'antan?" was certainly playing in my head as I wrote the book.

During the next two days, I spoke to students from a European History class, a U.S. History class, and an IGCSE history class about Auschwitz: Voices from the Death Camp, to students in Years 7-9 about Pompeii and students in Years 10-13 about glaciers.

Vous avez une merveilleuse école. Je voudrais remercier Mme. Marie-Odile Robbins pour oganiser ma visite et pour avoir rendu mon séjour si mémorable.
